PENJAGA

Installation Art by The Bay, KK

With PENJAGA, we wanted to connect our viewers with Bruneian culture while highlighting the role of both nature and society in shaping it. We combined the traditional with the modern in terms of design and materials to show how progress and innovation can be made while staying true to our roots.

ECO-ART CONNECTS

PENJAGA draws inspiration from local culture and traditions. Incorporating traditional ‘anyaman’ weaving, local market-sourced nipah leaves and recycled materials are used to create an asymmetrical shelter that evokes architectural domes in Brunei as well as the traditional fish trap ‘bubu’. It invites people to re-connect with Brunei culture through Art. The piece is supposed to be reminiscent of village life and also of a simpler time, where people lived in harmony with nature. PENJAGA features sounds recorded at Luagan Lalak - a natural symphony that is a reminder that nature is something we should appreciate and preserve. The experience of PENJAGA is supposed to connect viewers with Brunei in a a multi-sensory way.

"I hope people see art as something fluid and not limited. i hope we can show that art is really about expressing yourself and having fun doing it and it can be used to relay messages and themes. There is no limit to creativity! But also I hope our artwork can inspire Bruneians to participate in activities outside of the country and expand their horizons in doing what they are passionate about."
