Travel .  Kota Kinabalu .  Installation

We found as the trip went on, that PENJAGA was not just a visual art piece, but it really was an experience for people. It was a time to bond for the team, and we all felt like we learned a lot and did manage to feel a deeper connection with our cultures and traditions. We made everything by hand, without any power tools - cutting and nailing / screwing it all together and we gained a new appreciation for simple materials that we managed to make an art piece from.

While installing the art piece we did get reactions from the people around us who knew that it was a sort of hut, and there were comments of being reminded of their village, and also appreciation for our efforts in learning traditional skills and using them in our installation. These reactions were what we were hoping for and it made us all feel that we made some meaningful connections.
